Settle in for izakaya – Japanese sharing plates paired with cocktails made by the bartender. Issho-Ni means ‘together with’ and evidently, this is the place to come with a gang of friends. It’s run by a husband-and-wife team, and the level of cooking goes above and beyond what you’d expect at a neighbourhood restaurant.Īddress: Takahashi, 228 Merton Road, London SW19 1EQ Website: .uk Classic hosomaki (just one filling) include smoky toro taku and salmon. The sushi selection is extensive with snow crab, pink shrimp and eel among the nigiri and sashimi, and spicy tuna and crab avocado amongst the maki. At Takahashi, there’s a Mediterranean slant, with ‘tapas’ courses on the menu including Cornish scallop carpaccio with yuzu salsa and free-range crispy pork belly with aubergine miso. The black miso cod on the menu is a give-away, but from there things diverge. During the lunch hour, pick up quick bento boxes and mixed sushi sets with free-flowing miso soup and salad on the side.Īddress: Sushi Atelier, 114 Great Portland Street, London W1W 6PA Website: .ukĪnother Nobu alumnus is behind Takahashi, a small sushi restaurant in the unassuming environs of South Wimbledon. It’s the sushi you’ll want to come for, though try the dragon roll topped with BBQ eel and the tiger prawn with yuzu tobiko. It aims to be more laidback with a warm wooden bar dominating the interior, and more modern in terms of the menu with carpaccios, steamed dumplings and salads on offer alongside the sushi. Sushi Atelier is the most recent incarnation from the people behind Chisou, the traditional Japanese restaurant with locations in both Mayfair and Knightsbridge. It’s not cheap but it’s most certainly worth it for a special occasion.Īddress: Chisou, 22-23 Woodstock St, London W1C 2AR Website: Kick off with the excellent horenso salad – a mountain of spinach leaves topped with spicy tuna and a zingy yuzu sauce before diving into thinly sliced nigiri and crispy soft shell crab. Interiors see soft blond wood accents and an immaculate sushi counter ideal for asking the chef to serve you the best fish rolls of the day. Along with the setting on the top floor of White City’s Television Centre, it earns the restaurant its tag-line of ‘sushi in the clouds’.Īddress: Endo at the Rotunda, Television Centre, 8th Floor The Helios, 101 Wood Ln, London W12 7FR Website: Ĭhisou has been a long-time favourite with a smart Mayfair set for its swift, fresh and proper Japanese lunches. Dishes are presented at an ancient cypress table above which hangs a white cloud light installation with sinuous wavy shapes. Each 20-course sitting is an individual immersive journey led by Endo Kazutoshi, a third-generation sushi master from Yokohama. More stellar reviews followed and now Michelin-starred Endo at The Rotunda is one of the most coveted tables in London. Giles Coren declared the omakase tasting experience ‘the most perfect meal I have eaten in a restaurant in more than 20 years as a critic’. Lily BonessoĪddress: The Fuji Grill, Beaverbrook Town House, 115 Sloane Street, London, SW1X 9PJ Website: .uk We recommend the Kinky Boots – a Champagne cocktail served in an impossibly tall flute complete with a spoonful of passion fruit sorbet. Finish digesting on the coral velvet sofas at Frank’s Bar. A few standouts include Tuna Kakuni in ginger soy, which dissolves as it touches your tongue, and the six-day aged O-toro with black truffles, which marries smokey flavour with the freshness of the fish. Each is prepared before your eyes using traditional techniques to preserve the freshness of an open-sea catch and served with careful choreography. A 20-course menu spotlights a different type of fish in each dish. But, at the back of this buzzing establishment, we found what we came for: an immaculate mint- green Omakase sushi bar, complete with glass displays of moss and traditional Japanese crockery. Entering the Georgian building, you're greeted by glossy black and white checkered floors and jewel-toned interiors inspired by opulent country estates. The Fuji Grill, Beaverbrook Town House, Chelseaīeaverbrook Town House – a hotel, cocktail bar and restaurant in Chelsea – doesn’t exactly conjure up images of Japan.
